Often widows and orphans are people who suffer the most in society. Single mothers and children with no fathers statistically struggle. Fatherless children are at a dramatically greater risk of drug and alcohol
abuse, mental illness, suicide, poor educational performance, teen pregnancy,
and criminality.
Christians are called to be a source of help and comfort to these people. The Holy Father recently stated, "For this reason in the Bible, widows and orphans are people of whom God takes special care: they have last their earthly support but God is their Husband or their Father."
